Beethoven Complete Piano Sonatas - Cycle 3

Kammermusiksaal, Berlin Philharmonie, Berlin, Germany

Highlights

The third concert in Pi-hsien Chen’s acclaimed complete Beethoven piano sonatas cycle at the Berlin Philharmonie featured three of the composer’s most beloved works. This evening showcased the dramatic arc of Beethoven’s middle period, from the youthful passion of the “Pathétique” through the moonlit mystery of Op. 27/2 to the tempestuous “Appassionata.”

Her nuanced approach to dynamics and her profound understanding of Beethoven’s revolutionary harmonic language were particularly evident in the “Appassionata,” which received a standing ovation.
